Pixelmator Quick Tips: Align Center
Posted in Pixelmator, Tutorials on 28. Feb, 2010
One of the biggest functions missing from Pixelmator is the ability to align layers. This makes simple things like creating a border a real pain. In a few simple steps I will demonstrate how you can use the transform scale function to create shapes that are aligned to the center of your image.
Step 1
Create a new image in Pixelmator 400×400. Re-name the default untitled layer to background.
Step 2
Create a new layer and re-name it square. Fill this layer with black #000000. Transform the scale of the square layer, Edit>Transform>Scale. Choose 90% for the width and 90% for the height. This will create a square centered in the middle of the image. You can use different percentages to create a smaller or larger square.

Step 3
Create a new layer and name it rectangle. Transform the scale of the rectangle layer, Edit>Transform>Scale. Leave the width at 100% and change the height to 50%. Now you have a rectangle vertically centered to your image.

Conclusion
This work around isn’t ideal but it get’s the job done. Besides, discovering ways to make Pixelmator work for you is a great way to learn the program! Play around with the transform scale function and create some shapes centered to your image. Try using this technique to create a border with rounded corners.
